Do visions of sugar plums — or mice, or angels — dance in your child’s head? Young dancers and singers are invited to audition for roles in American Midwest Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker with a pre-Thanksgiving performance on November 22 at 2pm at the Arts Center at Iowa Western in Council Bluffs, followed by a three-show run on December 5 and 6 at the Orpheum Theater in Omaha.
Online pre-registration is required by Wednesday, July 8 in order to audition. A participation agreement signed by a parent or legal guardian must be turned in at audition. Those cast will have fittings the week of July 13, with show rehearsals starting later this fall.
- Vocal auditions for North Wind Chorus, a collaboration between American Midwest Ballet and Opera Omaha, will take place on July 9 for singers age 11 and older.
- Dance auditions will be held July 10 and 11 for students age 7 and older.
While the singing roles are reserved for young women only, dance roles are available for boys and girls. Dates, times, locations and informational documents needed for auditions are detailed on the audition registration page.
“This is an exceptional opportunity for young performers to be part of a professional stage production,” says American Midwest Ballet artistic director Erika Overturff, choreographer of American Midwest Ballet’s The Nutcracker. “Not only is it a chance to perform on stage, it is also a way for students to experience how a ballet production — and theater in general — works. One of the most priceless aspects of performing in The Nutcracker is working side by side with our professional dancers to experience firsthand the dedication and artistry that goes into a ballet production.”
